Organic farming system in Kandhamal is not a new and is being followed since time immemorial. It is a method of farming system which primarily aimed at cultivating the land and raising crops in such a way, as to keep the soil alive and in good health by use of organic wastes (crop, animal and farm wastes, aquatic wastes) and other biological materials along with beneficial microbes (bio-fertilizers) to release nutrients to crops for increased sustainable production in an eco friendly pollution free environment.

In the last few years Daringbadi block of district Kandhamal has experienced the major use of chemical fertilizers and cultivation of High Yielding Variety (HYV) of Seeds in agriculture rather than adapting organic manure and traditional seeds. It is felt need of the community and farmers from Jana Vikas field areas that inorganic farming for the farmers has no use in future and it has bad impact in the long run. Keeping that in mind, Jana Vikas has taken an initiative to revive and promote organic farming system in 13 villages under 3 Gram Panchayats (Hatimunda, Godapur and Tajungia) at demo field Sikarmaha of Daringbadi block, Kandhamal. The communities and farmers are extensively encouraged to adapt and use organic manure in their farming system, i.e mixed cropping, shifting cultivation and agriculture. The farmers, communities leaders and SHGs regularly visit to demo field Sikarmaha to experience the system of organic farming. Village Sikarmaha is just 25 K.M from block head quarter Daringbadi and 65 from Jana Vikas office. The organic farming demo field is taken care by Mr. Pilata Mallick from the locality.
